Gynecomastia (male breast) usually develops during puberty and causes many social and psychological disorders. It may also be secondary to drugs used to treat prostate cancer. Treatment consists of liposuction in the region and the removal of the gland by surgical access through the areolas. Local anesthesia with sedation is used and the discharge usually occurs on the same day.
There are silicone implants that mimic the shape of the pectoral muscle in various sizes. They are placed through a small incision inside the axilla. Reconstructive (pectoral muscle absence) or aesthetic surgery is prescribed to provide a better shape to this region. It is usually done under local anesthesia with sedation. Hospital discharge may happen on the same day or on the following day.
